Nameri National
Park, Assam :
S ituated on
the foothills of Himalayas, Nameri National Park boasts of a beauty that
is exceptional. Initially set up as a sanctuary with an area of 137 sq km, Nameri was finally awarded the status of National Park in 1998. In the
meantime, its area was also increased by 75 sq kms.
The park is
an abode of common as well as endangered species of flora and fauna of the
region. It holds the distinction of being the second tiger reserve in the
state of Assam. The beauty is elating with river Jia Bhoroli flowing
almost in the center of the park.
Flora:
The flora of the park includes of deciduous forests. The most prominent
among the Natural Forest species are Bombax ceiba, Dalbergia sisoo,
Sterculia villosa, Trewia nudiflora, Zizypphus jujuba and Litsaea
polyantha. The aquatic plant species include are Andropogon spp., Ipomea
reptans, Enhydra flushians, Nymphia spp and Wichornia spp, while the non
aquatic plant species include Phragmites karka, Arundo donax, Imperata
cylindrical and Saccarum spp.
Fauna:
The animal and reptile population of the park is
awe inspiring. Most popular of these
animals are the Tiger, Black bear,
Elephant, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Indian Bison, Pangolin, Indian wild
dog, Deer, Civet Cat, Capped Langur, Jackals etc. The animals are highly
different from one another, and thereby add to the charm of the park.
Birds:
Nameri National Park is also widely known for its
bird population. The most famous varieties of birds include the white
winged wood duck, four species of Hornbill. These birds provide a pleasing
view for the eyes of bird lovers.

River Rafting:
River Rafting is one of the exciting
options for tourists visiting the park. The swift flow of the water of
river Jia Bharali is perfect for a a gentle rafting trip.
Angling:
Angling is yet another exciting option for
visiting tourists. The water of Jia Bharali is full of Golden Masher,
providing anglers sufficient incentive to come here.
